President Declares State of Emergency in Sri Lanka Due to Severe Economic Crisis – Press Review

Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on Friday declared a state of emergency in the country, giving special powers to the army while enforcing strict laws.

Under these laws, the military is allowed to arrest and detain long-term suspects without trial.

According to NDTV, he said in a statement that “an emergency has been declared” to protect public order and maintain the essential supplies and services for the life of the community.

Earlier in the day, protesters marched outside the presidential palace on Thursday evening demanding the resignation of the president and then turned violent.

The protesters set fire to many vehicles and also stone at the authorities, after which the police were detained.

Sri Lanka is going through the worst recession since gaining independence from Britain in 1948. The country is in dire need of essential commodities, inflation is at its peak and people are facing severe power cuts.
